I worked as a Product Designer on Square’s Design System. Our system is called Market, a single, unified design system for Square sellers which touches all products within the Square ecosystem ranging from point of sale, retail, appointments, and restaurants.
My responsibility was to create and maintain a unified design system to modernize Square's enterprise software by not only bringing cohesion, but also flexibility to adapt the system for unique use cases that scale across general platforms and Square’s proprietary ones. I work on designing consistent sets of reusable design components and patterns that provide a scalable and accessible interface for Square sellers.
Market is a library that has over 500 components with variants which allow Square product teams to build experiences across web and native platforms.
Market is designed to keep tasks clear, focused, and intentional with interactions that are natural and meaningful while having adornments used with purpose. The result is a system where buyers and sellers can quickly find what they need.

Market is designed to make transactions easy for Square sellers to power their business by adapting to different device sizes. Market components are built to scale across devices including mobile, tablet, and desktop as well as proprietary hardware like Square register, terminal, and stand.
Market allows product teams to build omnichannel experiences across devices ultimately allowing Square sellers to sell within a storefront, on-the-go, or online.

Market allows Square teams to accelerate their process without needing to constantly reinvent the wheel. By using Market components, designers and engineers will reduce time on building UI—allowing them to focus on solving problems that truly differentiate their products.
When using Market, the maintenance and modernization of the design system is centralized. Standard is simple and custom is possible.

Through onboarding, embedding, and countless self-service documentation; we make Market easy for Square teams to adopt. Over 25+ teams and products made the switch to Market during the first year of launch.
As the system continues to grow, we are working with product teams on standardized patterns across experiences and verticals while also adding more flexibility in customizing existing components. We constantly reference data from component usage, product teams, and our sellers to determine improvements to our component library.

Market design system spans 10+ international markets by adapting to locale requirements and international data formats. Market averages 40,000 component inserts daily from Square teams with flexible components that can contain up to 800 different variations.
Like any product, Market will continuously be added to, evolved, and improved. The value of a system like Market can only be realized if it is truly self-serve with the goal of accelerating the work and reducing the resource commitment for Square teams.
