The UC Consortium for Black Studies in California fosters and supports the innovative and collaborative study of Black arts, cultures, philosophies, histories, and social movements. The consortium is an association of five University of California campuses—UC Santa Barbara, UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, and UC San Diego.

The visual identity embodies these universities' mission to explore and advance the field of Black studies across the UC system and beyond. The identity has the inherent potential to adapt to change and accomodate growth of the consortium. Just as the identity highlights individual universities, it simultaneously highlights the intersections of these universities in their mission to collaborate.

The Challenge

With five universities comprised within the consortium, it was important to think about five elements, in concert, with a sense of equity, balance, and space. Moreover, the collaborative aspect of the brand needed to be demonstrated and scaled as it was an essential part of initatives mission.

The Approach

Every element in the identity is designed to perform both independently and collectively. The visual identity is purposefully conceptualized and designed as an uncomplicated yet dynamic system that can be adapted and scaled to any use to support the Consortium for Black Studies in California as it engages with the public.
